NSW Community Legal Centres celebrate 40 years

Media Release - 20 October 2015

This year, Community Legal Centres in NSW are celebrating 40 years of fighting for justice.

‘In 1975, lawyers, volunteers, academics, social workers, students and community activists met in Redfern to discuss the need for community legal centres that challenged unfair laws as well as helping people exercise their rights’, said Alastair McEwin, Executive Director of Community Legal Centres NSW (CLCNSW).

‘40 years later, there are now 38 community legal centres across NSW offering free legal advice and advocating for the better and fairer operation of laws rights’, said Mr McEwin.

‘Community legal centres have played a key role in changing the law to achieve fairer outcomes. Community legal centres have worked with the government to improve the rights of boarding house tenants; protect the confidentiality of sexual assault victims; and regulate the practices of payday lenders rights’, said Mr McEwin.

‘We look forward to former staff and volunteers, our friends and colleagues in the justice sector joining us to celebrate the many achievements of community legal centres’, concluded Mr McEwin.
